Part 1

Go to the website www.sarc.com, this site is run by Symantec, the creators of Norton Antivirus.

Sarc.com

Or if you are using our free site toolbar (Techbar) then click on the virus detection link below "SUPPORT". Click here to download the free IE Toolbar addon.

Techbar - The Free IE Toolbar

Now scroll down the page until you find a picture which says "CHECK FOR SECURITY RISKS", click on the icon.

Now click on "START" below "VIRUS DETECTION".

A new page will pop up along with a security warning. Click "YES" to continue.

The virus software will now download, you will get another security warning, click "YES" to continue.

The virus scan will begin. Let it run and go get a cup of tea, a tin of beer or a nice wine. Of course if you are under the legal age, then get a soft drink.

OH NO, a virus has been found. Don't worry, just wait until the scan is finished.

An infection is found. As noted is picture below. The virus is a "W32.Maya", as stated in the program results. You also get the location. Unfortunately we only put this virus on the computer for testing purposes, and infection would be a lot more widespread. So take not of the virus name and proceed to the next step.

Now return to the www.sarc.com main page

Sarc.com

Click on "EXPANDED THREAT LIST AND VIRUS ENCYCLOPEDIA".

Now either search for the file name, are example being "W32.MAYA"

The virus is listed click on link for removal instructions.

There is no additional information, this is unusual, but usually means that a virus program will repair, or delete it with no problems. So download a virus program, update it and do a full system scan.

You may find that there is a virus removal tool. Check out this location :

 http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

If so download the removal tool and it will get rid of the virus for you. The information page on the virus will tell you if a removal tool is available.

Some viruses will have to be manually removed. Renaming and deleting files are common in this procedure. Working in the registry may also be required, remember to backup the registry up before doing anything, as changes can not be reversed.

How to Backup and Restore Registry

To open the registry editor, click on "START" then "RUN" and type "REGEDIT". then click on "FILE" and then "EXPORT", give the registry backup a name, and note where you save it to. If something goes wrong, you can import the backup file, by clicking "FILE" and "IMPORT", find the file you backed up and click "OK". The registry will be restored to its previous settings.

A good example, of all procedures can be found with the "W32.KLEZ.E@mm" virus. View page by clicking below:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

This virus has registry settings, and a removal tool. Best just running the removal tool. Then download , update and run a virus scanner.

Bit Defender - Click here for access - an online checker and removal tool

Conclusion

Remember virus knowledge is important before you attempt to remove. So find out the virus name and read up on removal instructions before you do anything. The "W32.KLEZ.E@mm" virus, if just deleted, will leave your computer with no working programs. Click on a file and you will get "MISSING SHORTCUT" errors. This is because of the registry settings. This is just one example, but believe me there are many more. Knowledge of your problem is the only way to resolve it.
