Device Drivers

DRIVERS -
Introduction

Device Drivers

To  explain what driver is, it is quite simply a piece of software that allows your hardware to work to its full capacity. All hardware in a PC has a driver.

Most of the time by default Windows will install a driver, which will allow basic functions of the device. An example of this being the Video Card. When installed by default (that is if windows has not got a proper manufacturer driver for it) it will install a Standard VGA driver, which will only give you a choice of 16 colours and a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. (This being the most basic of resolutions.)

Fortunately most hardware now is Plug and Play, which means the operating system, will automatically pick it up and install some sort of driver supplied by the manufacturer which maybe supplied on the windows CD. If it doesn’t it will be listed in device manger with a yellow question mark under other devices, which usually means the driver is not installed.
