Welcome to Microsoft's Windows 98 SE Install step by step - The General Way.

  • What you will require to do this walkthrough is 

    1. A Windows 98 CD

    2. A Computer

    3. Your Chosen CD-Rom Boot Media (CD-Rom Support)

    4. Your Chosen Method (Different Ways)

  • The Microsoft Windows 98 Install will bring the "Welcome to Windows 98 Setup" menu after you have completed the routine for your CD-Rom boot option and method. Click on Continue to move on.

  • The Setup wizard will now run through.

  • Microsoft's scandisk now appears, the Hard drive is being checked for errors, this must complete for you to continue installing Windows. When completed hit "ESC" on the keyboard.

  • Windows 98 Setup Wizard now appears, click continue..

  • Let the wizard complete.

  • The "Select Directory" screen is where you will install windows into, C:\Windows is the default, you can change this if needed. Click next to continue

  • Windows will now prepare the directory and then check there is enough room on hard drive to install

  • The "Setup Options" window will appear. For most Desktop users select Typical install (Default) for laptop users select Portable. The other two options speak for themselves. Click next to continue.

  • The next screen will appear, leave defaults and click next.

  • Now fill in the computer name, workgroup and computer description, you can put whatever you want in these areas.

  • And now select your Location and click next.

  • You will now be prompted to make a Startup disk click next. 

  • The system is ready to create the start up disk Insert a blank disk and click "OK". 

  • A few minutes later the disk will be created. Click OK after removing the Disk.

  • You are now told that windows is ready to install, click next.

  • Windows will now start to copy files.

  • After a period of time it will ask you to reboot, remove any floppy disks, if you have not done so already.

  • Windows will now reboot automatically in 15 seconds or you can click on restart.

  • Windows 98 will prepare to run for the first time and update files.

  • The system will now prompt you for a name and Company name. You can put what you want in here.

  • Now read the License agreement, Accept to continue, decline to exit out of setup. 

  • Now put in your Certificate of Authenticity (Product Key), located on your Windows 98 manual. Click next once typed in.

  • If product key is correct the "Start Wizard" screen will appear. Click finish to continue.

  • Windows will continue to update, and install default drivers. 

  • At this stage do not install any drivers from disk, even if prompted. Wait until windows is fully loaded and install them then.

  • Windows will continue to update, and detect plug and play devices.

  • This can take some time, so be patient.

  • Once finished you will get the date and time screen change as needed.

  • Windows will now setup the system preferences and links, this can take some time so be patient.

  • Once completed the system will reboot. This is automatic after a 15 seconds delay or you can click on restart.

  • System will now reboot again

  • On reboot you will get the chance to enter a password and user name, change as needed.

  • Now at last you are on the desktop. Start installing your drivers
